John Paul Jones made a guest appearance playing bass on the Butthole Surfers album "Independent Worm Saloon." Ironic considering the
band has a song called "Hairway To Steven." Jones not only produced this album, but also played some bass on it as well. Jimmy Page wanted Terry Reid to join Led Zeppelin to replace Dreja but Reid refused and Page then asked John Paul Jones to join them. He accepted and the band was formed. The original line up for Led Zeppelin members were Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Bonham and Chris Dreja. Dreja left Led Zeppelin shortly after their conception to become a photographer. Led Zeppelin hails from Britain and is known to the rock world as the most influential and popular rock groups of all times. Even after retirement which Led Zeppelin did in 1980, Led Zeppelin still continues to sell music and still had radio airplay. Led Zeppelin began their long lasting stand together in 1968. According to Recording Industry Association of America Led Zeppelin song Stairway to Heaven is considered the greatest classic rock song of all time. There are only two others who have beat Led Zeppelin astonishing record sales and they are The Beatles and Elvis Presley . Led Zeppelin has sold over three hundred million albums worldwide. Led Zeppelin has sold over one hundred million albums in the United States alone. Jimmy Page was the influence behind Led Zeppelin. He began the band as The New Yardbirds which he did to fulfill some contractual obligations. Led Zeppelin deliberately misspelled their first part of their name so people would not mispronounce it. Led Zeppelin was awarded Most Successful Song with their song Stairway to Heaven. Led Zeppelin`s song The Lemon Song was banned from airplay when it first came out for content. Led Zeppelin are one of the only two bands to ever have 5 diamond albums. The other band who has done this is the Beatles. Led Zeppelin was ranked #1 on VH1`s 100 Greatest Hard Rock Artists. Led Zeppelin was ranked #4 on VH1`s 100 Greatest Artists of Rock & Roll. Stairway to Heaven is ranked number 1 on rock.com`s top 500 classic rock songs. "Stairway to Heaven" is ranked number 6 on Rolling Stone Magazine`s list of the 1000 greatest songs ever written. Led Zeppelin was ranked #14 on Rolling Stone Magazine`s The Immortals - The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Led Zeppelin is ranked number 13 on Rolling Stone Magazine`s list of the top 100 musical acts of the 20th century. When Jimmy Page was assembling the group, Keith Moon (drummer from The Who) got word of his plans and predicted the group would go down "like a lead balloon" (this is a common English expression). Bassist and keyboardist John Entwistle thought it would be "more like a lead zeppelin." Page took the phrase and manager Peter Grant changed the spelling to "led" in order to avoid mispronunciation. | ||
