Trivia and Quotes

Trivia
  • All promotional material (including online trailers) bearing the movie`s original title, "Austin Powers in Goldmember", was withdrawn in late January 2002. MGM and Danjaq, who control the James Bond license, obtained a cease-and-desist order from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) arbitration panel on the grounds that New Line was attempting to trade on the James Bond franchise without authorization. The matter went to arbitration and the film was known briefly as "The third installment of Austin Powers" until the matter was settled on 11 April 2002. MGM agreed that New Line could use the original Goldmember title on condition that it had approval of any future titles that parodied existing Bond titles. New Line also had to agree to show the trailer for the new MGM James Bond film, Die Another Day (2002) with Goldmember.
  • Mike Myers`s entrance as Goldmember, owner of Club 69, parodies his earlier role as the owner of Studio 54 in the movie 54 (1998).
  • Mike Myers and co-writer Michael McCullers began writing a first draft in March 2001.
  • Director Jay Roach`s first cut of the film ran 3 hours long.
  • # # In the beginning of the film when Austin is in his shag pad singing, director Jay Roach`s wife and former Bangles lead singer, Susanna Hoffs, can be seen playing the guitar to Austin`s left.
  • One of the songs during the closing credits is an updated version of "Alfie" from the movie Alfie (1966) starring Michael Caine, who plays the character of Nigel Powers.
  • # # The one liner delivered to camera by Mike Myers and Micheal Caine "Eye-Thang-U" ("I thank you") was the catchphrase of English comedian Arthur Askey.
  • # The updated version of the song "Alfie" heard during the end credits was originally a musical number within the movie. The scene was shot including each character singing a verse or part of a verse of the song, but the musical number was later cut from the final film. It is included in the deleted scenes on the DVD release.
  • Sean Connery was considered to play Nigel Powers.
  • The number 42 appears at least two times in this film: - in the prison scene, Mini Me and Dr. Evil wear jerseys with the number on it - in the submarine scene, it appears on the accident sign. At the time, director Jay Roach was set to direct the movie of Douglas Adams The Hitchhiker`s Guide to the Galaxy (2005), which features significance to the number 42.
  • Signs found in the background of Dr. Evil`s sub: - All Henchmen Must Clock In With Their Own Timecard - 42 Days Since Last Accident/Liquidation - Hang In There!
  • # # One of the signs in Dr. Evil`s submarine illustrates how henchmen should correctly lift an unconscious captive in order to prevent any back pain. It reads "Lift with your legs, not with your back".
  • # # Other items on Austin`s "Things to do before I die" list: - Become International Man of Mystery - Be Cryogencally Frozen - Travel through Time, Backwards and Forwards - Catch Dr. Evil in the First Act - Find true love - Gain my father`s respect
  • The e-mail that Austin receives while explaining "the internet" to Foxxy reads: "Dear Mr. Powers, a new ATM card will be sent to you by fed-ex because your account was compromised by an unknown hacker who obtained your PIN number while you were purchasing an mp3 player on ebay, your bank".
  • # # Mike Myers is a Maple Leafs fan. As in the first two Austin Powers movies, there are more references to the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team. They include: - Mini Me wearing a Maple Leaf jersey during their video from prison - a caption during the newscast announcing the Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup.
  • "Austinpussy" was originally considered as the title for Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999). Concerns over the name led it to being used as the title for a movie-within-a-movie instead.
  • Cameo: [Kristen Johnston] who had played Ivana Humpalot in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999), is reportedly one of the dancers in Austin`s pad.
  • The footage of a younger Nigel Powers during the flashback scene is from actor Michael Caine`s film Hurry Sundown (1967).
  • # Quincy Jones, who appears during the opening credits, composed "Soul Bossa Nova," the theme music. As has been the case for the other two Austin Powers movies, the use of "Soul Bossa Nova" as the theme harks back to the popular Canadian game show "Definition" (1974).
  • # The ring tone of the cell phone was borrowed from the sound of the phone used in the `60s spy movies Our Man Flint (1966) and In Like Flint (1967).
  • The little cars in the car chase from Roboto`s warehouse are Corbin Sparrows.
  • The version of Walter Murphy`s "A Fifth Of Beethoven" heard in the film is an outtake from the Requiem for a Dream (2000) scoring sessions.

  • The scene where Austin in talking to Foxxy "through" the Nathan Lane character was first done in the movie Caccia alla volpe (1966) (a.k.a. After the Fox) with Peter Sellers. In that movie, the Peter Sellers character spoke to the Akim Tamiroff character "through" the beautiful Maria Grazia Buccella character.
  • During the "Hard Knock Life" rap song, you can see Mini-Me`s and Dr. Evil`s Prison Number. Dr. Evil`s prison number is 00001 and Mini-Me`s prison number is 00001/2.
  • Cameo: [Katie Couric] cop who says, "Time`s Up," when Frau Farbissina is visiting Dr. Evil.
  • # # Heather Graham reprised her role as Felicity Shagwell in a scene that was ultimately cut. Will Ferrell reprised his role of Mustafa in another deleted scene in which he has to answer a question after being asked four times
  • An extended version of Dr. Evil`s "Hard Knock Life" rap song was released as a music video. Besides including additional verses and dialog, the video also digitally blurs Dr. Evil`s mouth whenever he spouts a bleeped obscenity, something that does not happen in the film.
  • An early teaser trailer was made with original footage of Mini-Austin that parodied the opening of Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997).
  • In the scene called "Lights! Camera! Austin! - Opening Credits of the New Austin Powers Movie", Austin dances in a pink tutu on a set of steps. This is a reference to the "Swan Lake" scene Barbra Streisand did in Funny Girl (1968). Mike Myers and his mother are close friends and are both fans of Streisand.
  • Mike Myers has said that his glasses in all three films are meant to look like those worn by Michael Caine in The Ipcress File (1965), so Caine took the original glasses (model "Teviot 74" by UK Optical) to the set and wore them as Nigel.
  • The helicopter at the beginning of the movie is a Bell AH-1 Cobra gunship.

  • # # During the opening credits for Austinpussy, Danny DeVito (as Mini-Me) is seen firing an M-249 light machine gun, or as it is known in Europe, the FN MINIMI.

Also included are: - A gigantic "operatic" vomiting sequence ("the Fantasia (1940) of vomit scenes", according to director Jay Roach); - A musical number ("What`s It All About, Austin?") performed by Susanna Hoffs while Austin looks for his dad in Tokyo, featuring Number 2 in drag with Young Number 2; - A naked Young Austin with Young Evil; - A small weightlifting scene with Dr. Evil and Mini Me before their rap; - A confrontation between Mini Me and a prisoner after the rap; - A scene of Scott in Dr. Evil`s chair in the Hollywood sign lair; - An extra part of the opening dance number.
