The Burgomaster: Constable Crane! This is a song we have heard from you more than once. Now, there are two courses open to me. The first, is to let you cool your heels in the cells until you learn respect for the dignity of my office...
Ichabod Crane: I beg pardon. But why am I the only one who can see that to solve crimes, we must use our brains, assisted by reason, using up-to-date scientific techniques?
The Burgomaster: Which brings me to the second course. There is a town, two days journey to the north in the Hudson Highlands. It is a place called Sleepy Hollow. Have you heard of it?
Ichabod Crane: I have not.
The Burgomaster: An isolated farming community, mainly Dutch. Three persons have been murdered there, all within a fortnight. Each one found with the head lopped off.
Ichabod Crane: Lopped off?
The Burgomaster: Clean as dandelion heads, apparently. You will take these experimentations of yours to Sleepy Hollow, and there you will detect the murderer. Bring him here to face our good justice. Will you do this?
Ichabod Crane: I will.
The Burgomaster: Remember, it is you, Ichabod Crane, who is now put to the test.
Katrina Anne Van Tassel: Will you take nothing from Sleepy Hollow that was worth the coming here?
Ichabod Crane: No. No, not nothing.
[pauses]
Ichabod Crane: A kiss, from a lovely young woman, before she saw my face or knew my name.
Katrina Anne Van Tassel: Yes, without sense or reason.
Ichabod Crane: You believe the father killed her?
Samuel Philipse: The Horseman killed her.
Ichabod Crane: How often do I have to tell you? There is no Horseman, never was a Horseman, and never will be a Horseman.
[Pulls a pendant off of The Magistrate`s neck]
Ichabod Crane: What is that thing?
Samuel Philipse: It`s my talisman. It protects me from the Horseman.
Ichabod Crane: It was a headless horseman.
Baltus Van Tassel: You must not excite yourself.
Ichabod Crane: But it was a headless horseman.
Baltus Van Tassel: Of course it was. That`s why you`re here.
Ichabod Crane: No, you must believe me. It was a horseman, a dead one. Headless.
Baltus Van Tassel: I know, I know.
Ichabod Crane: You don`t know because you were not there. It`s all true.
Baltus Van Tassel: Of course it is. I told you. Everyone told you.
Ichabod Crane: I... saw him.
[faints]
Ichabod Crane: The millennium is almost upon us. In a few months, we will be living in the nineteenth century. But our courts continue to rely on medieval devices of torture.
High Constable: Stand down.
Ichabod Crane: I stand up for sense and justice.
Baltus Van Tassel: The horseman was a Hessian mercenary sent to the shores by German princes to keep Americans under the yoke of England. But unlike his compatriots, who came for money, the horseman came for love of carnage.
Ichabod Crane: We have murders in New York without benefit of ghouls and goblins.
Baltus Van Tassel: You are a long way from New York, constable.
Samuel Philipse: Five victims in four graves.
Ichabod Crane: Doctor Lancaster, Reverend Steenwyck, Notary Hardenbrook, and Magistrates Philipse, who tried to cut and run, and lost his head. Four frightned men, arguing on the very night Magistrate Philipse was killed. There`s a conspiracy here. The doctor, the reverend, the notary, and the magistrate. What is the secret that unites them? Magistrate Philipse knew there were five bodies to four graves, knew the widow was pregnant, but would not tell me the name of the father. What does this point to? We must proceed by a process of elimination. I shall make a list of every man and woman in Sleepy Hollow, starting with their chief citizen, Baltus Van Tassel. I feel we`re getting very close.
Young Masbath: Yes. I suppose Baltus is the chief citizen, now that old Van Garrett is dead.
Ichabod Crane: Yes. The Van Garretts. I had almost forgotten them.
Ichabod Crane: Come with me.
Young Masbath: Where are we going?
Ichabod Crane: To Notary Hardenbrook`s.
Young Masbath: Have you thought of something?
Ichabod Crane: Yes. I have.
Ichabod Crane: Katrina, why are you in my room?
Katrina Anne Van Tassel: Because it is yours.
Ichabod Crane: [opens the book] It was your mother`s?
Katrina Anne Van Tassel: Keep it close to your heart. It`s sure protection against harm.
Ichabod Crane: Are you so certain of everything?
The Burgomaster: Remember it is you, Ichabod Crane, who is now put to the test.
Katrina Anne Van Tassel: Is it Theodore?
Ichabod Crane: No. Pardon, miss, I am only a stranger.
Katrina Anne Van Tassel: Then have a kiss on my account.
Ichabod Crane: [to the Western Woods Crone] I should like to say that I make no assumptions about your occupation nor your ways, Witch... which... which... which are nothing to me, whatever you are.
Ichabod Crane: Katrina, I might have killed you. Why have you come?
Katrina Anne Van Tassel: Because no one else would go with you.
Ichabod Crane: I am now twice the man, and it is your white magic.
Lady Van Tassel: Dear stepdaughter... You look as if you`ve seen a ghost.
Lady Van Tassel: The easiest part was the first. To enter your home as your mother`s sick-nurse and put her body into the grave and mine into the marriage bed.
Baltus Van Tassel: If you are wise, you will leave this place.
Baltus Van Tassel: [to Ichabod] Young sir, you are most welcome, even if you are selling something.
Katrina Anne Van Tassel: I think you have no heart. And I had a mind once to give you mine.
[to the horse]
Ichabod Crane: Giddy-up... no, no this way... good horsey.
Lady Van Tassel: The Horseman comes. And tonight he comes for you.
Lady Van Tassel: Still alive?
Ichabod Crane: Run, Katrina.
Lady Van Tassel: Yes, do run, and jump, and skip.
Ichabod Crane: [the decapitated corpse of Masbath has been found] You have moved the body.
Dr. Thomas Lancaster: I did.
Ichabod Crane: You must never move the body!
Dr. Thomas Lancaster: Why not?
Ichabod Crane: Because...
Dr. Thomas Lancaster: This is most irregular, Constable.
Ichabod Crane: I should hope so, Doctor, but in this case necessary. I shall need to operate.
Dr. Thomas Lancaster: Operate? She`s dead.
Baltus Van Tassel: There is a conspiracy here, and I will seek it out!
Dr. Thomas Lancaster: Enough have died already. It is time we confess our sins!
Ichabod Crane: Once more, the neck wound cauterized. The sword thrust to the stomach... the same. But, to what purpose?
Dr. Thomas Lancaster: To what is your purpose is the question.
[Dr. Lancaster inquisitively looks at one of Ichabod`s operating tools]
Dr. Thomas Lancaster: What manner of instruments are these?
Ichabod Crane: Some of my own design!
[Regarding a spider]
Ichabod Crane: Kill it! No, no! Stun it!
[On Katrina`s apparent guilt]
Young Masbath: A strange sort of witch, with a kind and loving heart. How can you think so?
Ichabod Crane: I have good reason.
Young Masbath: Then you are bewitched by reason.
Ichabod Crane: I am beaten down by it!
[to Katrina, who is apparently guilty]
Ichabod Crane: It was an evil spirit possessed you. I pray God it is satisfied now, and you find peace. The evil eye has done it`s work; my life is over, spared for a lifetime of horrors in my sleep, waking each day to grief. Goodbye, Katrina.
Lady Van Tassel: You`re just in time to have your head cut off.
Ichabod Crane: [Studies the horse tracks surrounding Jonathan Masbath`s dead body, and takes giant footsteps] The stride is gigantic! The attacker rode Masbath down, turned his horse, and came back. Came back to claim the head.
[Takes a small bottle out of his bag and starts sprinkling powder near the severed neck. The powder sizzles]
Ichabod Crane: Yes. There`s a chemical reaction. It shows there was a powerful, singular thrust to the neck.
[Puts on strange goggles]
Ichabod Crane: Now.
[Using tongs, he lifts the skin of the neck and a beetle runs out. He shudders]
Ichabod Crane: Interesting.
Baltus Van Tassel: What is it?
Ichabod Crane: The wound was cauterized in the very instant, as though the blade itself were red-hot. And yet, no blistering, no scorched flesh.
Samuel Philipse: The Devil`s fire.
Ichabod Crane: Katrina... you took the evidence and burned it.
Katrina Anne Van Tassel: So you would not have it to accuse my father.
Ichabod Crane: I accuse no one.
Ichabod Crane: Yes I think you loved me that day when you followed me into the Western Woods... to have braved such peril.
[repeated line]
Ichabod Crane: I see.
[last lines]
Ichabod Crane: [arriving in New York City with Katrina and Masbeth] Ah, just in time for a new century. You`ll soon find your bearings, young Masbeth. The Bronx is up, the Battery is down, and home is this way.
Ichabod Crane: We take the Indian Trail to the Tree of the Dead.
Young Masbath: How will we recognize it?
Ichabod Crane: Without difficulty, I rather fear. Then climb down to the Horseman`s resting place.
Young Masbath: His camp?
Ichabod Crane: His grave.
Ichabod Crane: You have moved the body?
Dr. Thomas Lancaster: I did.
Ichabod Crane: You must never move the body!
Dr. Thomas Lancaster: Why not?

The scene where Ichabod Crane crosses the covered bridge and hears the frogs underneath croaking "Ichabod" and "Headless Horseman" is a tribute to Disney`s 1958 animated version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1958) (featured in The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)), in which Ichabod Crane, crossing a bridge, hears the frogs croaking the same words. Director Tim Burton, a former Disney animator, has cited the Disney version of the tale as his main inspiration for the look and style of his film. The scene of Ichabod Crane riding the Horseman`s horse backwards is also taken from the earlier film.

# Christopher Walken, who plays the Headless Horseman, played a schoolteacher in The Dead Zone (1983), in the beginning of which he tells his class to read "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow."
The town Sleepy Hollow was created from the ground up in three months. At the time of filming, it was the largest set built in England and was put up in record time. The last set that held this record was built for Billy Elliot (2000).
The Western Wood was built on a sound-stage so everything, the weather, light, could be controlled.
The Windmill was too large to be constructed on a sound-stage because it was over five stories high. The sails alone weighed over 2 tons.
The final chase sequence on the coach in the Western Wood took three weeks to film.
The Horseman`s horse is named Daredevil, the same name of Brom Bones` (Brom Van Brunt`s) horse in Irving`s original short story; the horse was purchased in Seville, Spain.
Christopher Walken`s character has no speaking lines, aside from a couple of "HAA"s to his horse and "shhhh."
Director Trademark: [Tim Burton] [scarecrows]
This was originally to be a Kevin Yagher directorial project. Tim Burton later took over the project, with Kevin Yagher remaining on with co-producing credits among others.
The dress worn by Katrina Anne Van Tassel (Christina Ricci) in the last shot of the movie has the same pattern as Michael Keaton`s outfit in the climactic scene of Beetle Juice (1988) also directed by Tim Burton.
Tim Burton and the crew of the movie built the small town Sleepy Hollow complete with rooms, floors, and stairs. The town was dismantled after filming was completed.
Historically, Ichabod Crane was a very unattractive man. Johnny Depp wanted to add prosthetics to his face to make himself look ugly, but Tim Burton wanted to base the character on Crane`s more unattractive personality traits - his reported squeamishness and eccentricity.
According to Tim Burton, the opening shots of Peter Van Garrett were shot by Conrad L. Hall, who was a friend of the film`s director of photography, Emmanuel Lubezki.
Star Johnny Depp adopted Goldeneye, the horse that played Gunpowder, Ichabod Crane`s horse in the film, when he heard it was going to be put down.
While Tim Burton admired Andrew Kevin Walker`s original script, he hired the famed playwright and Academy Award-winning screenwriter Tom Stoppard as script doctor. Stoppard did an uncredited re-write to tone down the violence of Walker`s script.
Ichabod Crane faints six times in the movie.
At the start of filming the three-way axe battle with Ray Park, Johnny Depp and Casper Van Dien, Casper Van Dien broke the index finger of his left hand. Although extremely painful, he carried on without telling anyone as he didn`t want his part cut short.
Ichabod Crane and Katrina Van Tassel were, reportedly, real people
Winona Ryder was offered the role of Katrina Van Tassel, but turned it down.
A mechanical horse, an updated model of one used in earlier films, was used for studio shots. The mechanical horse was originally developed for riding scenes with Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet (1944).

# Johnny Depp did all of his own stunts for the final scene where he is dragged by the horse - he had bullet-proof clothing underneath his wardrobe.
This film features three sith lords from the Star Wars prequels, Ray Park (Darth Maul), Christopher Lee (Count Dooku ) and Ian McDiarmid (Darth Sidious).
During the last scene Ichabod, during his explanation to Katrina and Young Masbeth of how easy New York is to navigate, says, "The Bronx is up and the Battery`s down." This is a line from the song "New York, New York" which is featured in the movie On the Town (1949).
Casper Van Dien in real life is related to the Van Tassels (Christina Ricci`s character`s family; she is his love interest in the film).
Casper Van Dien gained 30 pounds for his role of Brom.
The production notes on the DVD reveal that Johnny Depp based his characterization on the late Roddy McDowall (Fright Night (1985)), Angela Lansbury (The Mirror Crack`d (1980)) and Basil Rathbone (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939) and others).
Liam Neeson, Brad Pitt and Daniel Day-Lewis were all considered for the role of Ichabod Crane.
Marlon Brando was sought as The Hessian Horseman.
Although the headless horsemen in the books and fairy tales is physically not allowed to cross the bridge, as it is known as a safe haven for the characters, in this version he can cross it freely.
Michael Gough came out of retirement to play Notary Hardenbrook.
Although Tim Burton claims the windmill scene was a reference to Frankenstein (1931), which he lovingly quoted in Frankenweenie (1984), a stronger link can be made to Will Hay`s Oh, Mr. Porter! (1937) which also featured a windmill but not a headless horseman.
This was the very last movie produced on laserdisc anywhere in the world.
During the promotional interviews for the film, Johnny Depp gave Sir Michael Gambon the `task` of mentioning Claudia Schiffer`s knickers in every press interview. According to Gambon, when interviewed on BBC "Top Gear" (1978), he succeeded easily. Mind you, Gambon admitted that he lies in all interviews, so this may not be true after all!
Johnny Depp reportedly has never seen the film because he didn`t like the way he acted in the film.
The gown of patterned gray muslin worn by Jessica Oyelowo (Sarah) is the same costume worn by Billie Piper (Fanny Price) during the play rehearsal scene in Mansfield Park (2007) (TV), and by Thandie Newton (Sally Hemings) in Jefferson in Paris (1995). Sally`s gown is made from the fabric selected by Thomas Jefferson and Mrs. Cosway.
SPOILER: There are 18 decapitations in this film.
SPOILER: In The 39 Steps (1935), the professor shoots Hannay in the chest, and it appears that he is dead. However, the bullet was stopped by a hymnbook in the breast pocket of the coat he was wearing. In Sleepy Hollow (1999), Ichabod is shot and saved in a similar manner; this time the bullet lodges in a book of magic spells.
SPOILER: The scarecrow in the scene where Peter Van Garrett gets his head cut off by the headless horseman is the opening pumpkin/scarecrow from Tim Burton`s The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993).
SPOILER: Christopher Walken often talked about Sleepy Hollow as his first movie with a kissing scene. But he already had one in The Deer Hunter (1978) in which he kisses Meryl Streep and in The Dead Zone (1983). He also had a kissing scene with Grace Jones in A View to a Kill (1985).
