Kelly Osbourne originally auditioned as Anna (not as Anna`s best friend) and was offered the part but decided to back out. Later she said people told her it was the biggest mistake she`d ever made due to the success of the movie.
Annette Bening was originally slated to play Tess Coleman. She backed out shortly before filming and was replaced by Jamie Lee Curtis.
Producer Andrew Gunn said he initially hoped Jodie Foster (who played the daughter in the original film, Freaky Friday (1976)) would be game to play the mother in the remake. Foster declined, in part because of concerns that the casting stunt would overshadow the movie`s overall merit.
Tom Selleck was originally slated to appear but dropped out.
No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani was offered a role as a member of the band.
Marc McClure (who played Boris Harris, the daughter`s love interest, in the original film) has a brief cameo as Boris the delivery man.
The "S" and "Y" on the Sony television in the teacher`s lounge is blacked out, leaving "ON" on the front of the set.

# When Jamie Lee Curtis found out that Lindsay Lohan, who was going to be playing her daughter, had starred in the remake of The Parent Trap (1998) she asked "Which twin did she play?", unaware that Lohan had performed both roles.
In the end scene when Anna is dancing with Jake, you can briefly see a woman in the background dancing with an older gentleman, and she looks directly at the camera. This woman is Lindsay Lohan`s mother, Dina Lohan.

An installment of "Lizzie McGuire" (2001) starring Hilary Duff (and also produced by Disney) is considered a fourth version of Mary Rodgers` story (see movie connections). Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan had a rivalry during this period (also see trivia for Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen (2004)) and apparently Duff, losing out on this role, demanded that her show get "Freaky" for one installment.
When Anna (in her mom`s body) first enters her mom`s office, she gets a phone call and cancels a dentist appointment. "Like I`m going to take that bullet!" This is a reference to the original Freaky Friday (1976) where the mom (in her daughter`s body) visits the dentist.
