The role of Cosmo Jackson in Hero Wanted (2008) was originally written with Dutton in mind. The role later went to Ben Cross.

He made his Broadway debut in 1985 in August Wilson`s "Ma Rainey`s Black Bottom".

Was cast in Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998) as a detective, but as script changes rolled in, the role was cut.

Lives on a farm in Howard County, Maryland.

Has twice been nominated for Broadway`s Tony Award for plays written by August Wilson: in 1985, as Best Actor (Featured Role - Play) for "Ma Rainey`s Black Bottom," and in 1990, as Best Actor (Play) for "The Piano Lesson."
