I`m just really grateful and lucky that I get to keep existing in this business and existing by way of working as opposed to just being around the scene. So I love the process of making all of this. Being on set at the Sesame Workshop was one of the great things of last year for me. Getting just to work with Joss Whedon [on Dr.Horrible] for six days renegade-style was just unbelievable. Every week getting these new scripts and seeing what Barney Stinson gets to say and do is like a constant Christmas present. Things are swell.

My job is jester -- not advocate. I’m on a situation comedy responding to [Josh Radnor’s character] Ted Mosby and his wacky adventures -- that’s my job right now. If people want to comment about where I go to dinner, they are welcome to, but it’s not my job to respond to those statements. The Internet stuff threw me for a loop because I didn’t understand where the vitriol was coming from. I thought I had been representing well, and in turn it seemed like I was quickly condemned to step to the plate, and I was fine with that.

Playing gay in the theater is more fulfilling than on film because you can create a whole character and a backstory and you get to chip away at something over a long period of time. When you’re acting on film you sort of have one afternoon in front of a crew to just do it. And you don’t want to then be too overt and like that stereotype. But when I was doing A Paris Letter with Josh [Radnor], I was playing someone overtly flamboyant from the ’60s seducing him, and if I did that on film, I think it would look like I was acting too hard. It’s one of the fun things one wants to do as an actor, to play the flamboyant gay guy. But when you are gay that ends up being offensive to people. Say I was asked to play a flamboyant steward in an Airplane!–type farce. It would be a difficult decision to say yes to that role at this point because a lot of people would accuse me of making a mockery of gay people.

People in the business are equally as terrified now -- but I really find it a personal thing. And maybe I’m at the end of that era. I wouldn’t even want to stereotype today’s generation. But the majority of the casting departments are gay, and a lot of the executives are. I think it’s a matter of your abilities and how you carry yourself -- I don’t behave any differently toward you right now than when I am with David [Burtka, his boyfriend] in our apartment, watching "American Idol." OK, "So You Think You Can Dance." [Laughs] I can see why an agent wouldn’t want to sign on a real overtly effeminate male actor -- not because I have an aversion to them but because agents might know it limits their job opportunities.

If I wrote a musical it wouldn`t be about me. Although I do some magic, so it would probably be about a magician who appeared and re-appeared all over the place.

It`s nice to establish yourself as an actor first and a singer second. Proof is such a tremendous piece of work, and I`m incredibly lucky to be a part of it. I`m sure that the musicals will happen in the future, though.

I`ve got no plans to be a ballet dancer at the moment.

I loved Rent when I first heard it, but it grew on me and so did Tick, Tick... Boom. Some songs are more interesting than others and sometimes the ones that never stood out at first end up being the best to perform.

I`ve been taking a trapeze class for the last couple of years. I`m working on my double back flip right now.

I like the tube more than the NY subway though, you`ve got cushioned seats.

I would not dream of taking on Tobey Maguire. Plus, he`s a talented and nice guy, and I have nothing but nice things to say about him.

My parents own a restaurant in Albuquerque.

I`m in a play on Broadway, I have an animated TV show coming up, I have a few movies that just came out.

Thankfully I`ve been quite lucky in my career, but it`s always good to re-evaluate things and think about what else you want to do.

I`m restless. Luckily I have the kind of job where if I get bored with something I can move on, take up another role and re-invent myself.

I`m a games and theory kind of guy. I love puzzles, so it was fun dissecting Shakespeare`s prose.

I felt a little green, because Shakespeare writes the thought process within the text; it was tricky not to think of what to say and then say it, and instead just deliver the lines.

So I`ve done my fair share of theater. I have also been very fortunate in that I`ve been able to come to New York two or three times a year just to see as many shows as possible. I think the live theater culture here is incredible.

I have more artistic control in a smaller show. But it doesn`t really matter. Sometimes you can have the smallest role in the smallest production and still make a big impact.

We`re in such a volatile climate right now politically. I think they didn`t want Assassins to not succeed due to popular opinion and politics, versus on its own merits. I can respect that.

Charlie Sheen is who again? Denise is engaged?

Tobey`s a mellow, cool guy. He`s just a good guy. I know that`s not the answer you want, and I don`t mean that as the political thing to say, but he`s a nice guy.

When I auditioned for the show, I didn`t realize it was an MTV production, which is going to make for really good tunes during the episodes, if nothing else.

I`m shocked at how early everything closes here. But people start earlier. I miss the late nightlife in NYC, but then again I sing and burn so much energy in the show that it`s probably good-I get to go home and sleep.

I heard through the grapevine that they`d written this movie and that I was in it, and that I had to call my attorneys and make it stop -- that it was a bad thing, and I read it and thought it was hilarious. A friend was auditioning for a different part in the movie and said, `do you know about this movie that you`re in?` - on playing in Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004)

Starship Troopers was great. It was great fun to work on something with blue screens and big budget special effects. Denise Richards was nice to look at too, of course.
