Tony Randall (February 26, 1920 – May 17, 2004) was an American comic and actor. Randall was born Arthur Leonard Rosenberg in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the son of Julia (née Finston) and Mogscha Rosenberg, who was an art and antiques dealer. Randall attended Northwestern University for a year before traveling to New York City to study at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. He studied under Sanford Meisner and choreographer Martha Graham around 1935. Under the name Anthony Randall, he worked onstage opposite stars Jane Cowl in George Bernard Shaw`s Candida and Ethel Barrymore in Emlyn Williams`s The Corn Is Green. Randall then served for four years with the United States Army Signal Corps in World War II, refusing an entertainment assignment with Special Services. Then he worked at the Olney Theatre in Montgomery County, Maryland before heading back to New York City. Randall was married to Florence Gibbs from 1942 until her death from cancer in 1992. He remarried on 17 November 1995 to Heather Harlan, an intern in one of his theatrical programs. At the time, Tony was 75, Heather 25. The couple subsequently had two children, Julia Laurette Randall (b. 1997) and Jefferson Salvini Randall (b. 1998), and they remained married until his death in 2004. In his book Which Reminds Me, he proclaimed that any publicity an actor generates should be about his work, not himself. "The public knows only one thing about me: I don`t smoke," he proclaimed. But by 1995, he revised his opinion, and made his engagement and marriage to Harlan, and subsequent fatherhood, quite public. For the most part, the media treated the marriage in a light-hearted spirit, but when children entered the picture, not everyone was convinced the couple was completely forthright. Randall was a doting and loving father, Heather would later recount, who faced death bravely, and felt great sorrow to leave his children behind. Randall died in his sleep at NYU Medical Center of complications from pneumonia he contracted following bypass surgery in December 2003. He is interred at the Westchester Hills Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.

Quotes The competition is pretty rough these days. Well, I`m a tape-recording nut. I like to play my tapes. Everyone town of 100,000 in the United States should have a Classical Theater supported by the town, or the state of the county, or the Federal Government, as they have in every civilized country. Awards are only a publicity gimmick. So many people have won Emmys, so many people have won multiple Emmys that I think it`s a degraded award. You mustn`t take any award so seriously. And it`s a crime because the great plays of history, going all the way back to the Greeks, are part of everybody`s heritage. It`s just like in music, Beethoven or Mozart, that`s everybody`s heritage. I thought that I held the record of most appearances on the Bob Hope Show, but I think - It`s Brooke Shields. I never achieved my first goal in the National Actors Theatre, which is to have a permanent Acting Company. Inherit the Wind is a wonderful play, and I was in the original with Paul Muni. Sooner or later, we sell out for money. Marilyn Monroe was no fun to work with. She would report to work around 5:00 in the evening. You`ve been in make-up since 8:30 in the morning waiting for her. I was on the Johnny Carson show, I believe 114 or 104 times. And aside from those times on the air, I never spoke to him. I never met him. The real thing is, you should be seeing these plays in the Theatre. That`s what they were written for. That`s where the enjoyment is. Studying them is no enjoyment whatsoever. In fact, it used to be a joke if you studied at a University. Awards sell tickets, and they`re a clever publicity stunt. I would have started the National Actors Theatre 30 years earlier. Museums, I love museums. Many of the Universities have very good Theatre Departments these days. I`ve always enjoyed Acting. Acting is acting. The young actors coming out of the Universities are well trained. There`s only one thing worse than a man who doesn`t have strong likes and dislikes, and that`s a man who has strong likes and dislikes without the courage to voice them. We have too many actors for the jobs available. We`re also the only country that has the Death Penalty. That`s something to boast about, isn`t it? | ||
