 I figure a spark from our cutting must have caused the explosion. I was on the sideline when one of our kids turned to another and said `Coach told me I was supposed to be in on the PAT team, but I don`t have a clue when I was supposed to go in, ... I turned my head an smiled. You can`t take anything for granted. We`ve got some good kids here, ... Quarterback Lester Smith is a good thrower and we`vegot some kids who are good athletes. This is all new to everyone, ... Most of our kids haven`t played since pee-wee, if that. In reality, over half our kids haven`t played football and the other half haven`t played within two years if that. The toughest part for us is being so far ahead of where they are, we have to stop, ... We forget that even though we`re dealing with 9th-through-12th graders, they`ve never played so we have to evaluate ourselves as a staff. Take tackling. Some of them are learning and you talk to them, try to teach them and they have that far away look in their eyes and you have to go over it again. It was kind of like a pinball machine. Each team looked like it got the momentum, and then - turnover. Not once in any of this have they ever complained about what we`ve asked them to do, ... It`s an acceptance factor that they`ve come to us and said, `Whatever you want us to do. We`re here to do this to the best of our ability.` And the ability is sometimes limited, but you couldn`t ask for better kids than what we`ve got. We want them to have that local commitment to the community, and that`s a big part of our request for proposals. We`re not looking for Wells Fargo out of San Francisco. (Former athletic director) Bill Wilder went to the school`s board and church council and convinced them that they could have a football program for little money, ... They bought into that. There is excitement in the air, ... We`re not going to be a big draw like the over-the-mountain schools are. But the crowds have been supportive. | ||
