Paul Mooney is a true pioneer, one who often seems just a bit ahead of the pack. His credits in front of and behind the lens span decades, Good Times, Sanford & Son and Saturday Night Live, to name a few. Along with his writing, he also starred in a handful of cult classics — think Which Way Is Up? and Bustin` Loose, Hollywood Shuffle — and portrayed balladeer Sam Cooke in The Buddy Holly Story. Mooney wrote material for Richard Pryor`s Live on the Sunset Strip and the biopic, Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling, but who really knew that he was the mastermind behind the creation of In Living Color`s Homey the Clown, that sometimes on-point, otherwise-paranoid, race-aware brother with the red `fro and the ridiculously out-of-touch. He also released two albums, Race (1993) and Master Piece (2002), both of which he continues to plug (and sell) at his comedy shows. Mooney remains focused on breathing life into his characters on Chappelle`s Show and traveling the country, dropping a little socio-political science along the way.
