Leon Ames Biography

Leon Ames (January 20, 1902, Portland, Indiana – October 12, 1993, Los Angeles, California), an American film and television actor, was born as Leon Wycoff (Waycoff/Waykoff) to a family of Russian extraction.

He is most widely remembered for playing a number of fatherly figures in such titles as Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) and Little Women (1949).

He also appeared in notable roles in Quick Millions (1931), Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932), The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946), The Velvet Touch (1947), and Peyton Place (1957).

Other television roles included lead roles in the television adaptations of Life With Father and Father of the Bride, and as Mr. Ed`s neighbor, Gordon "The Colonel" Kirkwood .

His last film roles were in Testament (1983), with Jane Alexander, as `Pop` in Jake Speed (1986), and as Kathleen Turner`s grandfather in the film Peggy Sue Got Married (1986).

He was married to Christine Gossett from 1938 until his death. They had a son, Leon, and a daughter, Shelley.

He served as president of the Screen Actors Guild, of which he was one of the founding members, from 1957 to 1958.

  • In the 1960s, he owned 4 California Ford dealerships. They were located in Studio City, Encino, Redondo Beach, on Pacific Coast Highway near Prospect, and Los Angeles. In the latter part of the 1970`s Leon Ames Ford was sold/bought out by Payton Craymer Ford. This in turn was sold to Power Ford. The Redondo Beach dealership closed and was moved further up the Pacific Coast highway towards Lomita. The Los Angeles dealership remains in business today and is now called "Midway Ford". It`s located at 200 N. Vermont.
