Kelton was born in Bamberg, Germany. Her Czech parents had escaped to Germany where she was born at a refugee camp. Her parents were described as hippies. Kate and her mother settled in Toronto when she was seven. In Toronto, she attended the Etobicoke School of the Arts and received a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Film at Ryerson University in 1998. Kelton began her career as an artist before moving into the genre of acting. She is also a former model.

Some of her movie credits have included Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle and American Psycho II: All American Girl. She has also appeared in Shaggy`s music video It Wasn`t Me
