Joe Gilgun is an English actor best known for playing scruffy but lovable rogue Eli Dingle in ITV`s Emmerdale. Joseph was born in Chorley, Lancashire, to mother Judith and father Andrew. The oldest of three children, he has two younger sisters, Jennie and Rosie. As a child actor, he had a memorable role playing cute little tearaway Jamie Armstrong in Coronation Street between 1994 and 1997. He has also appeared in the Channel 4 television series Hollyoaks and Shameless as well as Sorted and the TV film Big Dippers. He won the role of Eli Dingle in 2006 and has been quoted as saying "I love my job. I consider myself a very lucky guy." In 2007, Joseph also starred alongside several other Dingle family actors from Emmerdale in Ghosthunting with..., hosted by Yvette Fielding, in which the cast were taken to three separate locations to search for evidence of paranormal activity. Throughout, Joe entertained his fellow cast members with his warm sense of humour. Other TV appearances he has made as himself include an ITV special Kids from Coronation Street in 2004, Loose Women and Emmerdale: The Dingle Family Album 2 in 2007, and Emmerdale Uncut in 2008. His "claim to international fame" is the movie "This is England", Joe Gilgun`s debut as a film actor was as the kind-hearted skinhead Woody. A semi-autobiographical feature film written and directed by Shane Meadows, it was released in the UK on the 27 April 2007 and subsequently won several awards including a BAFTA for `Best British Film` 2008. For this role, Gilgun was nominated for an award and received many positive reviews about his performance.
