Moretti was born on June 2, 1980 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to an Italian father and a Brazilian mother. He and his family moved to New York City when he was 4 years old, and had plans to stay there only for three years, but in the end they stayed for seventeen. In an interview for a brazilian website, Leo Moretti, Fabrizio`s brother, stated that even after all this time living in the states, they always felt like foreigners, considering themselves as brazilians and always strongly identified with their brazilian roots.
As a teenager, Fabrizio attended the Dwight School with fellow band members Nick Valensi and Julian Casablancas.
Moretti dated Drew Barrymore from April 2002 until January 2007, after they met backstage during a Strokes concert. Rumors of engagement arose several times, but the wedding never happened. In an interview, Moretti once stated that he believes "marriage is not anything that will secure the future of your relationship,”[cite this quote] and therefore plans to "never get married". He is currently dating fellow musician Binki Shapiro.
Moretti is also an enthusiastic artist; he has multiple examples of his artworks at The Strokes` website, including a portrait of fellow bandmate Nick Valensi.
He is fluent in Portuguese.
His parents and brother live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and he visits them twice a year.
Moretti is now working with Rodrigo Amarante of brazillian alternative group "Los Hermanos" and Binki Shapiro on a side project during The Strokes` break called Little Joy.
Moretti also has another side project with Devendra Banhart in a band called Megapuss.
