Esther Ralston Biography

A wholesome, incredibly beautiful blonde during Hollywood`s silent age, leading lady Esther Ralston was publicized as "The American Venus" after appearing in a 1926 film so entitled. She was virtually born (1902) in a trunk and was appearing in the burlesque, carnival and vaudeville circuits with her father, mother and four brothers in a family act by the time she was two years old. The family was billed as "The Ralston Family with Baby Esther, America`s Youngest Juliet." She broke into films as a teen and after several unbilled roles, went on to become one of movie`s highest-paid silent stars in serials and westerns (notably opposite Hoot Gibson and Tom Mix). Her most familiar roles were as Mrs. Darling in the silent classic Peter Pan (1924) and as the Fairy Godmother in A Kiss for Cinderella (1925). She retired from films in 1941 and appeared on stage and in radio soaps but eventually lost her fortune and was forced to find work outside of the world of entertainment. In the ensuing years she found herself employed as a department store salesperson and talent executive. She died in her early 90s.

Quotes
  • [interview in 1978] I want to believe in something inspirational, that has courage, that you can hang your hat on a star. And you can`t in the restricted films of today. It`s too blatant. There`s nothing courageous or inspirational about them. I just don`t go anymore.
