Diana Muldaur Biography

Muldaur is probably best known for playing L.A. Law`s Rosalind Shays (the tough, sharp litigator who plummeted to her death down an empty elevator shaft in an infamous 1991 episode), and Dr. Katherine Pulaski in the second season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Muldaur also performed the part of a doctor by providing the voice of Dr. Leslie Thompkins in Batman: The Animated Series.

She starred in movies such as The Other, One More Train to Rob, McQ and The Lawyer.

She worked with L.A. Law co-star Richard Dysart at New York`s legendary Circle in the Square in the mid-1960`s.

She was a guest star in the episodes "Return to Tomorrow" and "Is There in Truth No Beauty?" of the original Star Trek, and had a recurring role on the McCloud television series. She also starred in the short-lived TV drama Born Free. She also guest-starred in an episode of the second season of the TV series "Kung Fu" in 1973, opposite David Carradine. She played Theodora in the show titled "The Elixir", and played a travelling show-woman who yearned for freedom from men - topical at the time in the seventies.

While filming the episode "Unnatural Selection" on Star Trek: The Next Generation and using extensive make-up to make her look older, she and fellow actress Patricia Smith felt so tired that they swore never to work on science fiction again. Also, the Dr. Pulaski character proved unpopular with fans of Star Trek-The Next Generation, so Muldaur left the show after only one season.

Muldaur also guest stared in the TV series The Incredible Hulk, play the part of Helen Banner, David Banner`s sister.

She had guest starred in the Gunsmoke episode "Fandango" (1967) with James Arness. An excerpt of that episode`s dialogue was sampled on the Pink Floyd album The Wall, after "Hey You" and before the brief song "Is there anybody out there?" Arness: "Well, there`s only about an hour of daylight left, we better get started." Muldaur: "Isn`t it unsafe to travel at night?" Arness: "Well, it`ll be a lot less safe to stay here, your father`s gonna pick up our trail before long." Muldaur: "Can Lorca ride?" Arness: "He`ll have to ride...."

Muldaur earned two Emmy-nominations for her role on L.A. Law. The scene where Rosalind and Leland were discovered in bed was ranked as the 38th greatest moment in television in an issue of EGG magazine.

A graduate of Sweet Briar College, Muldaur was at one point a board member of the Screen Actors Guild and later the president of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Retired from acting, Diana Muldaur is an Airedale Terriers breeder, owner, and judge.

Muldaur said, in an interview in 1991[citation needed], that she had some firsthand knowledge about "behind-the-scenes-backstabbing" thanks to the nightmare she lived through on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

She`s called the cast of L.A. Law "the closest family".[1]

L.A. Law`s Richard Dysart said, in an interview in 2000, that he and Diana are "good friends". He also said that "Diana acted so well, she had the whole country talking".

Diana described Richard Dysart as "wonderful" on The Roy Leonard Show.

Diana described Majel Barrett-Roddenberry as her friend in an interview in 1998.

David E. Kelley often speaks very highly of Diana and her character on L.A. Law: "Believe me, no one relished Roz more than I did". He gives her credit for "churning things up and giving rise to a volatili

Quotes
  • I just fell in love with it, in love with the history of it, with all of it. I didn`t discover film until much later. Beneath my dignity, film was. I was one of those repulsive creatures. (on her early days acting in school plays)
  • I worked with him in the mid-`60s on Broadway in New York, and I was just a kid starting out and he was a big star and a character star, and the joy was that because he looked older he was playing wonderful older character roles which made him, I think, the great actor that he is today...he`s wonderful! - about her "L.A. Law" (1986) co-star Richard Dysart.
  • About Gene Roddenberry: "The qualities that I admired so in him were his creativity, because in Hollywood they buy you because you`re creative and then they try to take it all out of you, to make you commercial, and he never ever gave in." (2006)
  • "Most of my career I have played interesting - particularly in my day which was a long time ago - interesting roles that were women doing something other than just motherhood. Sometimes it was just motherhood, which was also just as important. But also it was doctors, lawyers... Certainly that`s how Gene always saw me, as a human being on the face of this Earth with some dignity, which is what I have tried to portray in all of my roles ... I think we tend as people to denigrate ourselves often, and the joy of trying to bring whatever that basic wonderful dignified thing is, that is in each and every human being, is very important to me." (2006)
  • On doing a "Star Trek" convention after 10 years: "One of the main reasons I`m here, if not the entire reason I`m here, is to celebrate Gene Roddenberry. He discovered me, in many ways, when I was a kid in Hollywood, and he put me in two different segments of the original "Star Trek" (1966), which were a total joy to do. I cannot tell you how inventive and how creative everybody was who worked on that show, from the actors, the makeup, the hair, the camera ... I will never forget it as long as I live" (2006).
