Mabel is the last known person to have seen William alive. She had gone over to borrow a book. When he walked her out, they blew kisses to one another and he said he would call later to see how she liked the book. She would never hear from him again.

As she laid dying in a sanitarium from tuberculosis, her last words were, "I wonder who killed poor Bill Taylor?".
