At sixteen, over her mother`s objections, Cyd went to Los Angeles, and started dance classes with Nico Charisse who had his own ballet school. With war threatening, Americans were being advised to return home. Sid remained in London and was surprised by a visit from Nico Charisse who had flown from Los Angeles to London to declare his love. As a girl, Sid had a crush on the handsome Frenchman, and now at the age of eighteen she accepted his proposal. Their wedding took place in France in a Catholic Church at Virchinny on August 12, 1939. Nico was sixteen years her senior, and it was speculated that the loss of her father had figured into her hasty decision.
Nico Charisse Jr was born on May 7, 1942 and Sid was delighted with this very beautiful child. The couple separated in 1947 and Cyd moving in with her mother. The couple would divorce in 1947 and Nico Charisse would remarry soon afterwards.
